Trailing vs end-of-day vs static drawdown: pros and cons
The drawdown type decides more about your chance of passing than the profit target does. Two accounts with the same $2,000 drawdown can behave completely differently. Here is how each model works.
Intraday trailing drawdown
The limit follows your highest balance in real time, including open profit. If you are up $800 in a trade and it comes back to break even, your limit has still moved up $800.
- Pro: usually the cheapest evaluations and frequent big discounts.
- Con: unrealised profit that you give back still costs you room.
- Con: punishes letting runners breathe.
- Best for: tight take-profit trading such as TP1-only.
End-of-day (EOD) trailing drawdown
The limit only moves up based on your closing balance at the end of the session. Intraday swings do not move it.
- Pro: intraday noise and open-profit pullbacks do not eat your buffer.
- Pro: much friendlier to scaling out and runners.
- Con: evaluations are often slightly more expensive.
- Con: you can still breach intraday if the balance falls through the current limit.
- Best for: most intraday futures traders.
Static drawdown
The limit is fixed at the starting balance minus the drawdown and never moves.
- Pro: the simplest and most forgiving model.
- Con: rare, usually smaller allowance and higher price.
- Best for: swing-style holds and wider stops.
Side-by-side example on a $50k account with $2,000 drawdown
Same trade, very different buffer. Most firms stop trailing once the limit reaches the starting balance — check the exact lock rule with your firm.
| Event | Intraday trailing | End-of-day | Static |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start | Limit $48,000 | Limit $48,000 | Limit $48,000 |
| Trade peaks +$1,000, closes +$200 | Limit $49,000 | Limit $48,200 at close | Limit $48,000 |
| Room left after that day | $1,200 | $2,000 | $2,200 |
How to protect any drawdown type
- Risk a fixed, small amount per trade — micro contracts make this easy.
- Take partial profit early on trailing accounts.
- Stop for the day after two losses.
- Use automatic flattening before news and the daily close.
Common questions
Which drawdown is best for beginners?
End-of-day drawdown is the most forgiving common model for intraday traders because open-profit swings do not tighten the limit.
Does trailing drawdown ever stop?
On most firms it locks once it reaches the starting balance (sometimes plus a small buffer). Confirm the exact rule with the firm.
