NQ vs ES: which index future should you trade?
NQ and ES are the two most traded equity index futures in the world. They move together most of the day, but their personalities are very different.
Key specs
| NQ (Nasdaq-100) | ES (S&P 500) | |
|---|---|---|
| Point value (mini) | $20 | $50 |
| Tick size / value | 0.25 = $5 | 0.25 = $12.50 |
| Micro contract | MNQ — $2 per point | MES — $5 per point |
| Character | Fast, wide ranges, tech-heavy | Smoother, deeper, more mean-reverting |
Volatility and stop size
NQ often moves several times more points than ES in a day. That means bigger targets but also wider stops. ES is calmer and many traders find it easier to read structure on.
Which one for a prop account?
ES gives smoother equity curves and smaller swings in dollars per contract on micros. NQ produces faster targets and is where most ICT-style traders operate. Trading both at once doubles exposure because they are highly correlated — MFT blocks an NQ entry when an ES position is open and vice versa.
SMT divergence between NQ and ES
Because they should make matching highs and lows, a moment where one sweeps a level and the other refuses is a strong reversal clue. MFT's SMT Reversal model is built exactly on that.
Common questions
Is NQ harder to trade than ES?
NQ moves faster and needs wider stops, so mistakes cost more. Many traders start on MES or MNQ micros.
Can I trade NQ and ES at the same time?
You can, but because they are highly correlated you mostly double the same bet or hedge yourself.
