SMT divergence trading: how to use NQ vs ES divergence
Smart Money Technique (SMT) divergence compares two correlated markets. When they disagree at a key level, one of them is showing you a trap.
The idea
NQ and ES usually make highs and lows together. If NQ breaks below its London low while ES holds above its own, the sell-side raid on NQ was not backed by the broader market. That non-confirmation often marks the turn.
Bullish and bearish SMT
- Bullish SMT: one market makes a lower low, the other a higher low.
- Bearish SMT: one market makes a higher high, the other a lower high.
Confirmation before entry
- Divergence at a meaningful level (session high/low, PDH/PDL).
- Market structure shift on the market that swept.
- A fair value gap from the shift, then a retest of it.
Stop and target
Stop beyond the divergent extreme. Target the opposing liquidity — the other side of the session range or the previous day high/low.
Mistakes
- Comparing pairs that are not truly correlated.
- Entering on divergence alone, without a structure shift.
- Using tiny 1m swings that are just noise.
