Prop firm vs personal live account: which one should you trade?
A prop account gives you leverage for a small fee; a live account gives you freedom and every dollar of profit. Neither is better for everyone.
Comparison
| Prop firm | Personal account | |
|---|---|---|
| Money at risk | Evaluation fee only | Your whole deposit |
| Rules | Drawdown, consistency, news, close | Only your own |
| Profit kept | Usually 80–90%+ | 100% |
| Size | Often 5–15 minis | What your capital supports |
| Payout | Requests, buffers, caps | Withdraw any time |
When a prop firm makes sense
- You have a tested plan but little capital.
- You want hard limits that stop you on bad days.
- You accept fees as a cost of doing business.
When your own account makes sense
- You have enough capital to risk small amounts per trade with micros (MNQ, MES, MGC).
- You want to hold runners without trailing drawdown pressure.
- You are tired of evaluation resets and payout rules.
Using MFT on a live account
MFT works the same on a personal account. Connect TradersPost to your broker, choose TP1 Only or Full Scaling, pick the markets you want to trade, and the same signals, news filter and session-close flatten protect your own capital. Many traders run one prop account and one small live micro account side by side.
Common questions
Can I use MFT with my own broker?
Yes. Any broker supported by TradersPost, such as Tradovate or NinjaTrader, can receive MFT signals.
How much capital do I need for a live futures account?
Micro contracts let you start small, but you should only risk money you can afford to lose and keep risk per trade low.
